No injuries after recycling truck strikes building in Midland (6 photos)

Officials looking into how and why the vehicle picking up recycling products reversed while unattended

No injuries are being reported after a recycling truck hit a commercial building on Hugel Avenue in Midland this morning.

But there is significant structural damage to the building, which houses Midland Family Dentistry and Keenans Accounting Services.

“We were called here at 7:45 after hearing a vehicle had run into a building,” Midland Fire Department Capt. Jamie Mark told MidlandToday from the scene that showed a large fissure in the two-storey building’s exterior with dozens of red bricks lying on the ground. "OPP were already on the scene.”

Mark said firefighters evacuated the building and were “awaiting a structural engineer.”

Across the street on Borsa Lane, the truck operated by Waste Connections of Canada could be seen with several bricks adorning its back end.

A company employee said the driver “was pretty shook up” from the incident.

An OPP Commercial Motor Vehicle Inspector officer dispatched to the scene told MidlandToday he will check out the vehicle's mechanics to try to determine how the unattended recycling truck rolled from Borsa Lane and crossed the street before careering into the commercial building.

Building inspectors and bylaw officers from the Town of Midland are also at the scene assisting with the investigation and setting up a safety perimeter around the building.

The two affected businesses will remain closed until it is deemed safe to enter the premises again.
