A resident foiled an attempted home invasion in Newmarket by two armed men Wednesday night.

When a resident arrived at a residence near Bathurst Street and Mulock Drive on May 1 at 9:31 p.m., two men armed with firearms followed up the driveway after exiting a dark-coloured sports utility vehicle, York Regional Police said in a news release.

The victim confronted the suspects and a struggle ensued, police said. The suspects attempted to force their way into the residence but were unsuccessful.

The two men fled the scene in their vehicle. There were no injuries.

Both suspects are described as male, Black, approximately 25, medium build, wearing surgical masks, black shirts and black pants. A third suspect was operating the SUV, however, no description is available, police added.

Investigators are appealing for any witnesses to come forward, and they would like to speak with anyone with video surveillance or dashcam footage in the area at the time of the incident.

York Regional Police is reminding members of the community:

  • Stay alert and aware of your surroundings
  • Members of the community should not try to fight back. Any resistance may cause the suspect(s) to escalate their level of physical force to accomplish what they intend to do
  • If you find yourself the victim of a crime, cooperate and be the best witness you can be
  • Remember as much as you can about the suspect(s), including a physical description and clothing
