Woman arrested in Alcona after baby left in locked car

Woman arrested at the scene and charged with failing to provide the necessaries of life; Baby boy taken to hospital as a precaution

South Simcoe police have charged a 40-year-old woman after a newborn baby was left alone in a hot vehicle in Innisfil.

Today around 12:50 p.m., police were called to a plaza parking lot on Innisfil Beach Road in Alcona by citizens who located an unattended baby inside a locked vehicle.

The one-month-old boy was crying and appeared to be in distress.

The citizens broke a window and opened the door.

Simcoe County paramedics were called to the scene Friday afternoon and transported the baby to a local hospital as a precaution.

A 40-year-old Innisfil woman was arrested at the scene and has been charged with failing to provide the necessaries of life. She was released with a future court date.

Police said her name is not being released to protect the identity of the child.

Police are also reminding people never to leave anyone unattended in a vehicle during hot summer weather. Temperatures inside a vehicle can quickly become much hotter than the temperature outside even if the windows are opened slightly. The situation could be deadly.

The same caution applies to pets.

We would like to thank the citizens that rescued this baby, saving his life and averting a tragedy. These heroes will be recommended for civilian citations.
