More charges laid in drugs, weapons probe in southern Ontario

London man charged with several cannabis-related offences; Investigation included heavy police presence on Dunsmore Lane on March 9

More charges have been laid following co-ordinated police raids in southern Ontario earlier this month dubbed Project Weaver, which included a home in east-end Barrie.

Officers descended on several locations March 9, including a house on Dunsmore Lane, as part of the investigation.

On Thursday, police announced another person has been charged under the Cannabis Act and Criminal Code after an additional search warrant was executed by the Project Weaver investigative team, resulting in the seizure of approximately $1.8 million in illegal cannabis and illegal cannabis products.

A 35-year-old man from London, Ont., has been charged under the Cannabis Act with possession for the purpose of distribution, possession for the purpose of selling and unlawful production of cannabis, as well as possession of property obtained by crime under the Criminal Code

On March 18, Ontario Provincial Police and partner agencies announced the results of an eight-month investigation into firearms and drug trafficking in southwestern Ontario. Project Weaver saw 11 search warrants executed on March 9, resulting in the arrest of 10 individuals who now face a combined 268 charges.

Police say there were significant seizures cannabis, cocaine, explosives and firearms, including grenade launchers.

No Barrie residents have been named among those charged as part of Project Weaver and it remains unclear how the Dunsmore Lane home was linked, if at all, to the investigation.

OPP Det. Staff Sgt. Scott Wade previously told BarrieToday there was assistance locally from the Barrie police tactical unit as well as the explosive disposal unit.

“We are still sorting through all our evidence and more information will be coming," he said at the time.

As a result of the province-wide warrants, two illegal cannabis storefronts have been shut down.

After the initial search warrants, police say they also had grounds to execute an additional warrant in London on March 12.
