A missing Springwater Township man has been found deceased.

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said Saturday morning that Harvey Doherty, 87, was spotted at approximately 3:20 p.m. Friday by officers in a police helicopter in a river, just more than a kilometre from his residence.

OPP emergency response team members then found Doherty, deceased.

Acting Sergeant Terri-Ann Pencarinha, media relations co-oridinator for OPP Central Region, said Saturday morning a cause of death has not been determined by police and she was unsure if a post-mortem would be done.

Pencarinha was asked if foul play is suspected.

“No, I have not heard that,” she said.

Doherty had last been seen Thursday, May 26 just before 4 p.m., when he took his two dogs for a walk in the trails immediately behind his residence. The trail system is located in the area of County Road 27, north of Highway 26 in Midhurst.

Police said Doherty did not have his wallet with him and had left his cellphone at home.

Both of Doherty’s dogs had returned home before he was found Friday afternoon.

OPP say officers exhausted all efforts and resources to locate Doherty. OPP specialty units - such as the emergency response team, police dogs and the aviation unit - assisted with the search.

Officers began searching Thursday afternoon and into the night, and continued the search Friday morning and afternoon. A number of volunteers from Georgian Bay Volunteer Search and Rescue also assisted.

An OPP command post was set up at Simcoe County Museum in Midhurst.
