Man faces impaired, fail-to-remain charges after car careens into home (4 photos)

Incident happened shortly after 5 a.m., Sunday, on St. Vincent Street; Home's garage and another vehicle in the driveway also damaged

A car crashing into a St. Vincent Street home’s garage Sunday morning in Barrie has resulted in criminal charges against a 29-year-old man.

City police received the call at 5:17 a.m.

“It came in as a fail-to-remain, and upon arrival (officers) set up a perimeter and contacted our canine unit,” Barrie police communications co-ordinator Peter Leon told BarrieToday. “They immediately commenced a track and around 6:30 this morning, we got a call from a person who said that they were at Duckworth and Grove streets, and that they were involved in the collision on St. Vincent Street.”

Police went there and arrested a man, before taking him to Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre with minor, non-life-threatening injuries.

The man has since been charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle, driving with more than the legal limit of alcohol in his system, and failing to remain at the scene of a collision, which is under the Criminal Code as well.

A red Ford Focus hatchback slammed into a garage of the home, near Bell Farm Road, while a mid-sized Chrysler in the driveway of the double garage also appears to have been damaged.

The Ford’s front end crumpled on impact, which was also hard enough to displace bricks on the front of the garage.

“Barrie Fire (and Emergency Service) has been in touch with the city and they’re trying to arrange for a structural engineer to come out and determine the damage that’s been done by the car into the house, as to what steps need to be taken next,” Leon said.
