London man charged after driving wrong way on Hwy. 11, crashing into police cars

The Orillia Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have charged a London, Ont. man after driving south in the northbound lanes of Highway 11 in Severn Township.

On Oct. 21, 2018 shortly after 3 a.m., the Orillia OPP was contacted in relation to a motor vehicle travelling south in the northbound lanes of Highway 11 near Bayou Road. 

Several officers attended the area and located the wrong-way vehicle. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle without success. After a short period of time, the vehicle was finally stopped on Laclie Street near Sundial Drive.

A total of three police cruisers were damaged as the male driver (is alleged to have) intentionally struck the cruisers on several occasions. There were no injuries resulting from the incident.

The lone male driver, identified as Timothy Martyn, 35 years old of London, Ont., was arrested and charged by members of the Orillia Detachment. The charges include;

  • Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
  • Flight while pursued by peace officer contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
  • Driving while ability impaired - motor vehicle contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
  • Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
  • Drive wrong way - divided highway contrary to the Highway Traffic Act
  • Fail to stop for police contrary to the Highway Traffic Act

The accused was held in custody for a bail hearing at the Ontario Court of Justice in Orillia where they he was released on his own recognizance with his next court appearance scheduled for Nov. 20, 2018.
