Little girl found wandering city streets reunited with mom

'At the end of the day, she is home and safe and sound and that's all that matters,' says police official who urges parents to keep doors locked

There was, fortunately, a happy ending to a frightening incident earlier today in which a little girl wandered away from her Barrie home.

Police got the call just after 8:30 a.m. Wednesday morning about a girl, aged between two to three years old, wandering around the Eccles Street area on her own.

Barrie police communications co-ordinator Peter Leon told BarrieToday it was a trying time for police as they couldn’t get the information they needed.

“We tried to speak to the child, but obviously at that young age it was hard for her to understand what was happening and what was being asked,” said Leon. “Police tried to find her home but could not, so we put her picture up on social mdeia to see if anyone recognized her.”

Shortly after the photo was posted, someone contacted the mother, who came out of the house and to where police were.

“This was a case of the little girl getting an unlocked door open and slipping out. It's a great reminder to make sure your doors are locked because kids can learn fast and you never know when they’ll learn to open doors,” said Leon.

“If you have young children, you may want to invest in a lock that is a little higher up than usual.”

Leon said everyone was safe and unharmed.

“At the end of the day, she is home and safe and sound and that's all that matters,” said Leon.
