Knife-wielding man causes 'some tense moments' at north-end Walmart

'The accused approached a person in the store and the two of them had words,' says Barrie police official

A knife-wielding man was arrested Tuesday evening after "some tense moments" at the north-end Walmart store.

Police were called to the Bayfield Street location around 8 p.m. for a weapons call involving a knife.

A 43-year-old Barrie man was arrested at Anne Street North and Livingstone Street West and charged with assault with a weapon, weapons dangerous and uttering threats causing bodily harm, according to police.

No one was injured in the incident.

Barrie police communications co-ordinator Peter Leon told BarrieToday that many people witnessed the incident.

“The accused approached a person in the store and the two of them had words. The other person ran throughout the store, causing some tense moments,” said Leon. “The accused left the store and was followed and monitored at a safe distance until police could make the arrest down the street.”

While many people may be looking for more information about the incident, Leon said police will not be releasing some details.

“Several people in Walmart and at the scene of the arrest had observed a bit of a disturbance and so it's important the public knows what happened,” Leon said. “But the man in custody is dealing with some underlying issues and we will not be releasing his name because of that.”
