City police say they nabbed two impaired drivers in Barrie on St. Patrick's Day.

Officers from the Barrie police traffic unit conducted RIDE checks on Sunday, according to a news release issued this afternoon.

A spotcheck set up at Bayfield and Collier streets netted the first arrest of the night after a 57-year-old woman from Sault Ste. Marie failed an alcohol screening test.

The driver was taken to Barrie Police Headquarters where it was determined her blood-alcohol level was in excess of the legal limit.

She was charged with impaired driving with a blood-alcohol level exceeding .80 milligrams.

A second RIDE location was set up in the Lakeshore Drive and Victoria Street area. At 10:47 p.m., police say a 28-year-old Toronto man was arrested for failing an alcohol screening test and failing to pull over when he was entering the RIDE spotcheck.

The driver was transported to police headquarters where it was determined he was operating his motor vehicle in excess of twice the legal limit.

He was charged with dangerous operation, operation while impaired, and operation while impaired over the legal limit of .80 mgs.

Both drivers are scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Barrie on April 3, 2024, and have had their vehicles impounded for seven days, and their driver’s licenses suspended for 90 days.
