Driver charged with impaired in train-versus-truck collision

SPRINGWATER TWP. - On Sept. 1, 2019 at approximately 9:05 a.m., members of the Huronia West detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Springwater Fire Department and the Simcoe County Paramedic Service responded to a collision involving a vehicle and a train on Vespra Valley Road in Springwater Township.

An initial police investigation revealed that a vehicle attempted to beat the activated lights at the railway crossing. Through further investigation officers determined the driver was operating under the influence of alcohol.

The driver was cleared by paramedics with minor injuries and transported back to the Huronia West detachment for breath test, where he provided two suitable samples of breath registering 200 and 190 mg/100ml of blood.

Michael Ohlschlager, 44, of Highland Grove, Ont., is charged with:

  • CC 320/14(1)(b) Adult Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
  • HTA 163 Disobey railway crossing signal- fail to stop

First appearance is Sept. 24, 2019 in the Ontario Court of Justice in the Town of Collingwood, Ontario.
