'Tis the season for a rise in certain types of scams and fraud, according to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. We recently received two separate reports of residents attempting to purchase vehicles online but after payment was made, the seller stopped responding to inquiries. The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre has some good advice on how to protect yourself when online shopping. Keep in mind that fraudsters pose as genuine sellers and post fake ads for items that do not exist.

Be wary if the listing price for the item (e.g. event ticket, rental, vehicle, puppy) is too good to be true. Always do your research before you buy by confirming their contact information and reading reviews. Whenever possible, exchange goods in person or use your credit card for payment. Most major credit cards offer coverage against fraud.

The Anti-Fraud Centre has released its list of 12 Days of Holiday Scams.
