A 32-year-old Clarksburg man is now in custody after crashing the stolen vehicle he was driving into another car early this morning.

Barrie police communications co-ordinator Peter Leon told BarrieToday the two-vehicle collision occurred at 5:31 a.m. at the intersection of Bayfield Street and Cundles Road.

The driver of the stolen vehicle, which Leon noted was reported stolen from a southeast Barrie home a couple of days ago, left the scene, prompting police to bring in the canine unit to search for the suspect.

While that initial search was unsuccessful, the suspect was located and arrested by police a few hours later.

“He was going west on Cundles and struck the southbound vehicle,” said Leon, adding there didn’t appear to be any injuries to the driver of the other car. “I drove by and there was just basically some AbsorbAll on the ground. The airbags were deployed in the stolen vehicle, so it was obviously a significant type of impact to do something like that.”

The suspect has been charged with multiple Highway Traffic Act-related offences, as well as impaired operation by drug and possession of stolen property over $5,000. He is being held for bail.
