Barrie Police Service has arrested and charged a driver after a collision between a recycling truck and sedan in the east end of Barrie.
On Monday, March 12, 2018 at 10:40 a.m., police were called to the area of Grove Street East and Owen Street in the City of Barrie for reports of a collision. The small sedan had struck the recycling truck from the rear as it was collecting waste and was wedged under the truck.
Luckily there were no injuries reported, however the officer suspected the driver of the car was under the influence. Testing for alcohol impairment returned negative and upon learning the female was possibly on medication that could alter her cognitive state, the driver was arrested for being impaired by drug. The female was taken back to the Barrie Police Service for further testing which confirmed the officers initial observations.
The 48-year-old Barrie female was charged with care and control while impaired by drug and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle. She will attend a Barrie court in April to answer to her charge.
Barrie Police Service would like to remind the public prescription drugs, when used properly or when abused, can also impair driving. Legal drugs, such as opioid pain relievers and benzodiazepines (prescribed for anxiety or sleep disorders) can affect a person's ability to safely control a moving vehicle. Take the time to speak to your doctor or pharmacist about the affects of each prescribed drug. over the counter medication as well as the affects when combining medication. (Government of Canada)
Although the ways in which drugs affect the body and brain vary, the effects will have the same overall result: a decrease in the brain’s ability to process information and respond by movement, skills relevant for driving.
