Bystanders help thwart car-jacking attempt in south-end Barrie

Police want to talk to the female victim who was assaulted in the incident when a man, who earlier was involved in a shoplifting incident, tried to take her Honda

Police are trying to locate a woman who was assaulted in the city's south end Friday morning after a failed car-jacking.

At approximately 9:30 a.m., at the intersection of Mapleview Drive West and Bryne Drive, the female driver of a white Honda Civic was assaulted by a man who tried to take her vehicle by force.

Peter Leon, Barrie police communications co ordinator, told BarrieToday the man was involved in an initial incident at the Bayfield Mall prior to the attempted carjacking.

“The man was involved in a shoplifting incident on Bayfield Street and then later on Mapleview Drive West. In that south-end incident, he tried commandeering the woman’s vehicle but was stopped by several people standing by,” said Leon.

"They held him until police arrived but the woman had left the scene and we just needed to speak with her as well.”

No information was given about the man arrested by police as Leon said the investigation was in its very early stages.

“The good news is, it doesn’t sound like the woman sustained any serious injuries, but obviously we would like to speak to her with regards to what happened,” said Leon.

This is the second incident involving a carjacking or attempted carjacking this month as a Jan. 12 incident saw a stolen vehicle end up crashed near the lakeshore.

“I would tell drivers to always be careful in any situation,” said Leon. “It's not a bad idea to think ahead and just lock your doors once you’re inside the vehicle.”

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the woman in Friday's attempted carjacking should call PC Langdon at 705-725-7025, ext 2912.
