Barrie traffic stop leads to $40K in drugs taken off the streets

Barrie police say they seized "significant quantities" of fentanyl, cocaine and crystal methamphetamine with a street value of $40,000 following a traffic stop this morning. 

Shortly before 2 a.m., Friday, Feb. 3, a Barrie police sergeant stopped a vehicle that ws travelling on Anne Street and then eastbound onto Dunlop Street West.

Police say the vehicle's occupants, a 38-year-old woman who was driving and her 53-year-old male passenger, both of no fixed address, were then investigated.

"The driver was found to be lying about her identity and as she was being removed and arrested for obstruct police, evidence related to drug use was located," police said in a news release. "Police then removed and arrested the passenger and the investigation continued."

Police say the drugs and other evidence that was located were consistent with drug trafficking.

The man and woman were transported to the Barrie Police Service Headquarters where additional charges were laid.

Police say they also seized a prohibited weapon.

The man and woman have been charged with possession of a Schedule 1 substance (three counts), possession of a Schedule 1 substance for the purpose of trafficking (3 counts), unauthorized possession of weapon, and knowledge of unauthorized possession of a weapon.

The woman, who was driving, was additionally charged with obstructing a peace officer and driving while under suspension.

The man is also charged with fail to comply with a release order after he was arrested and charged by officers from the Barrie Police Service Community Safety and Well Being Unit – High Harm Team last week. This team, which was assisted by the Barrie Police Tactical Support Unit, had executed a Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA) search warrant at a Donald Street motel room on Wednesday, Jan. 25 where police say a large amount of fentanyl, crack cocaine, heroin and weapons were seized.

Both of the accused were held for a bail hearing. Police say the male was remanded into custody, while the woman was released with a future court date.
