The Barrie Police Service released an update on Thursday night indicating that Health Canada confirmed pills found in candy by an 11-year-old Barrie boy to be Melatonin.

Health Canada has since confirmed the pill to be Melatonin. A supplement to counter the effects of jet lag, or help someone sleep if they have an unusual work schedule or suffer from a circadian rhythm disorder. This supplement can be accessed over the counter at any pharmacy or Health Food Store.
The investigation is ongoing and police continue to urge parents to thoroughly check their children’s Halloween treats. Anything that appears to have been opened should be thrown away. If candy appears to have been tampered with, police should be called immediately.

The Barrie Police Service is reminding parents to carefully check their children’s Halloween treats after receiving a report of candy tampering on Thursday, Nov. 1, 2017.
An investigation has commenced after an 11-year-old Barrie boy located an individually wrapped cherry flavored Tootsie Roll, which had contained an unknown pill, in his Halloween candy. The boy had been trick-or treating in the area of Cundles Road, West, near Emma King Elementary School Tuesday night.
The candy was never ingested, and upon discovery police were called immediately. The candy will be sent to Health Canada for examination and further details will be released as they become available.
Investigators are urging parents who had children trick-or-treating in the Cundles Road, West area to be extra vigilant when checking candy.
