Neighbours on the porch of a John Street home after emergency crews were called following a death inside the home March 9.

A man has been found dead in his downtown apartment in Barrie.

Barrie police have not yet released the identity of the man who died in his rental unit on John Street at the corner of Sanford Street March 9.

His body was discovered by a roommate in the large rooming house at approximately 6:30 p.m., Wednesday.

“The fire trucks were here. They had the whole house taped off,” said Frank Johnston, who watched the scene unfold from his driveway on Sanford Street.

Cory Csernetics lives on the top floor of the home and said the man who died was one of three who lived in the basement of the John Street house.

“He was a nice man,” said Csernetics from the porch Wednesday.

He estimates the neighbour was approximately 60 years old and had lived there several years.

Barrie Police Investigative Services and the forensic identification unit had attended the house after uniform officers initially responded to an ambulance assist call, said Barrie police spokesperson Peter Leon.

“We are assisting the coroner with a death investigation and are holding the scene until told otherwise,” Leon said Wednesday.

By 7 p.m., March 10, the police caution tape had been removed.

Csernetics and his partner, Kiesha Moore, said they had heard loud arguments coming from the basement since the weekend.

They are still bothered by what they say is the death of a gentleman who was kind to them.

“It’s scary when it happens at home,” said Csernetics.

Police have not released any other details about the investigation.
