One person was arrested and charged after a single-vehicle collision in the city’s south end led to weapon and drug charges after police discovered a gun in a pickup truck early this morning.

A Barrie man was arrested and charged after a single-vehicle collision in city's south end this morning led to officers finding drugs and a loaded gun in the vehicle.

At 1:40 a.m. on March 12, Barrie police were called to a crash on Bayview Drive, near Springhome Road.

Upon arrival at the scene, officers found a pickup truck had collided with a hydro pole at the northeast corner of the intersection.

The unconscious driver, a 41-year-old Barrie man, was being treated by paramedics.

“Police immediately determined that the driver was impaired by drug,” police stated in a news release. “He was placed under arrest and transported to a local hospital where the investigation continued.”

Prior to departing the scene, police say a satchel the man was wearing was searched. It was found to contain a substance believed to be cocaine. At the hospital, the man was also found to be in possession of what was believed to be methamphetamine.

Also located in the pickup, and in close proximity to the driver, was a fully loaded semi-automatic firearm, according to police.

The man was treated at hospital and released back into police custody. He transported back to police headquarters where the investigation continued.

The man has been charged with operation of a motor vehicle while impaired; dangerous operation of a motor vehicle; possession of a Schedule I substance (cocaine); possession of a Schedule I substance (methamphetamine); careless storage of firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition; careless use of firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition; and possession of a loaded prohibited or restricted firearm.

None of the allegations have been tested in court.

The accused has been held in custody and is scheduled to appear by video for a bail hearing later today at the Barrie courthouse.
