On Saturday, Jan. 13, 2018 at approximately 7 p.m., members of the Nottawasaga Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were called to the scene of a two vehicle collision on Highway 89, between the 8th and 9th Line of Essa Township.
The collision involved a Toyota Sienna van travelling eastbound and a Volkswagen Golf travelling westbound on Highway 89, when the two vehicles collided head-on. Officers were assisted at the scene by Essa and New Tecumseth Fire Department, Simcoe County Paramedics and Central Region Technical Traffic Collision Investigation team.
The male driver of the eastbound vehicle, Johannes Rybroek, age 79 of Barrie was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The male driver of the westbound vehicle, age 28 of Innisfil was transported to a local hospital and later transported to a Toronto hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The investigation is still ongoing.
