Barrie man charged with impaired, vehicle theft in Parry Sound

Police say suspect was spotted by two civilians trying to steal vehicle; they took custody of man and turned him over to the cops

PARRY SOUND TOWNSHIP - On May 11, 2019 shortly before 7:30 p.m., members of the West Parry Sound Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were dispatched to a male attempting to steal a vehicle on Great North Road in Parry Sound, Ont.

Police arrived on the scene and observed that two civilians had taken custody of the male. He was turned him over to police who determined that he had consumed alcohol and driven the vehicle.

The West Parry Sound Detachment arrested its eighteenth impaired driver of 2019.

Kirk Debassige, a 32-year-old male from Barrie, Ontario was arrested and charged with:

  • Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs, contrary to section 320.14(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC),
  • Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentrate (80 plus), contrary to section 320.14(1)(b) of the CC, and
  • Theft over $5,000 of a motor vehicle, contrary to section 334(a) of the CC,

The driver was released on a Promise to Appear and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Parry Sound, Ontario on May 12, 2019. The vehicle he was driving was impounded for seven days.

The OPP reminds motorists that there is no safe amount of drug or alcohol consumption when driving. Anyone who suspects a driver that is driving while impaired is urged to call police by dialing 9-1-1 immediately.
