Peacefully passed at the Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre on Sunday, November 8th, 2020 at the age of 83 years. Predeceased by his wife Jean (2001). Beloved father of Teresa, Darren, PJ and the late Gerard (2018) and father-in-law of Cheryl. Proud grandfather of Noelle and Simone. Dear brother of Trevor (Mary Anne), Patricia (Neville) and Malcolm. Will be missed by sister-in-law Yvonne, cousins Myrna (Rudolf) Holder, Winnifred Nurse, nephew Paul and great-nieces Jahnari and Nyah, and many extended family members and dear friends.
George arrived in Barrie in August of 1965, soon followed by his loving wife Jean and son Gerard. He first taught at St. Mary’s elementary school, then moved to Eastview Secondary School, finishing a career that spanned 30 plus years as Chaplain of St. Joseph’s High School. He was a Permanent Deacon at St. Mary’s Church for 35years, and a member of the Barrie Council of the Knights of Columbus. George was also a past member of the King Edward Choir. George had a great love for people and sport and during those teaching years was involved in coaching soccer and rugby teams at the different schools he taught at.
Visitation will take place at the Steckley-Gooderham Funeral Home, 30 Worsley St., Barrie on Friday, November 13th, 2020, from 2 – 4 p.m. and from 7 – 9 p.m. Funeral Mass will take place the following day on Saturday, November 14th, 2020 at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 65 Amelia St., Barrie at 10 a.m. Interment to immediately follow at the St. Mary’s Cemetery, 208 Sunnidale Rd., Barrie. Please note that facial coverings, as well as physical distancing and gathering restrictions are mandatory. Donations in George’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Simcoe County, or Kidney Foundation of Ontario, and are greatly appreciated by the family.
