July 21, 1946 (Scheveningen, The Netherlands) - April 8, 2021 (Barrie, Canada)
Knowing that his only comfort in life and in death was that he belonged body and soul to his faithful Saviour Jesus Christ, our dear husband, dad and grandpa, John van Schubert, passed away peacefully on April 8, 2021. He fought a great fight and is now resting in the arms of his Lord.
John was a loving and loyal husband to Ann (nee Schouls) for 52 years through bounty and less, through sickness and health, through much laughter and occasional tears, all by the grace of God.
Dad has been a wonderful father to his children. Kim (Todd), Kevin (Ann), and Darryl (Kelly) all felt his loving presence, knew his convictions and learned the Truth from him.
He will be painfully missed by his incredible 9 grandchildren who loved and were loved by their Grandpa dearly. Ryan, Kayla (James), Samantha, Bradley (Courtney), Breton, Nicholas, Jonathan, Zachary, and Jaclyn have fond memories of Grandparents’ Days, Myrtle Beach,family dinners with lots of food, Tim Horton’s iced capps and donuts, Grandpa’s boat, summer cottages, trips to Holland, hockey rinks where he was their loudest cheerleader and fan, and many more times with their amazing Grandpa. He saw Family as the greatest earthly gift and his favourite times were when we were all together.
John was a good and faithful servant for Kingdom work and took this job seriously serving on many church councils and committees, Christian school boards, the Bibles for Missions Store, singing praises in many choirs, and wasn’t afraid to tell you of his convictions for his Lord.
John was born in Scheveningen, The Netherlands on July 21, 1946 to Robert and Jenny van Schubert. He was their fourth child and a brother to Betty (Bill), Bob (Judy), Albert (Els), Martin (Susan), and Henry (Maureen). He was also a beloved brother-in-law to Peter and Jeannette Schouls, and Carl and Sylvia Schouls (and the late, Margaret). He will be sadly missed by many nieces and nephews on both sides as well as dear relatives overseas.
John worked proudly as a Civil Engineering Technician and Project Manager for various firms in Brampton, Barrie, Whitby and Kitchener. He was well respected for his knowledge, work ethic, integrity and common sense - something he fervently passed on to all his family culminating in us doing our best for the glory of God.
John and Dad loved a good joke or story and loved to retell it, sometimes embellishing with vibrant words and actions until the listener was doubled over in laughter. That voracious appetite for fun endeared him to many friends and colleagues that have known him throughout the years.
A few paragraphs could not describe adequately who our husband, dad, and grandpa was but for those who knew him they can read between these lines and know he was so much more.
John’s journey home was unexpected in our minds but not in God’s. We are so thankful for all of the amazing people who played a role in caring for him in the last weeks from his family nurse practitioner, to the team of doctors and nurses on the Respiratory unit at RVH, all of the amazing respiratory therapists who followed him throughout his stay, and the phenomenal critical care team in ICU who treated him with such expertise and us with such compassion.
Visitation will be held at Covenant Christian Reformed Church on Tuesday, April 13, from 2-4pm and 7-9pm. Please note that COVID-19 protocols will be strictly enforced. (101 Ardagh Road, Barrie, ON, L4N 9B6)
A funeral for the family only will be held at Covenant CRC in Barrie on Wednesday, April 14 at 11:30 am with Internment to follow.
