Hilda Florence Stiff (nee Steer), 96, of Barrie, Ontario, slipped away peacefully Friday, April 24, 2020 with her husband Art at her side. Known to all as "Florence", she worked as a telegrapher for Canadian Pacific during the war years, handling radio traffic from Europe and  across Canada, a job in which she excelled and took great pride. Originally from Midland, Ontario, she and Art moved to Willowdale where they raised their family. Prior to retiring they moved to Thornhill and Florence worked for many years as the office manager for the Medical Services Department at York University. After retirement Florence and Art moved to Barrie, and divided their time between their much loved summer cottage on Six Mile Lake, where she loved to entertain friends and family. Florence was a consummate knitter, talented oil painter, quilter and loved all types of hand needle work. She was always charming, witty and cheerful. Florence is survived by Art, her husband of 76 years, and by her two children, Mary Boddy (Frank) of Barrie, Ontario and Thomas (Susan) of Collingwood, Ontario. She will be sadly missed by her seven grandchildren; David, Douglas, Alison, Laura, Kayli, Andrew and Lexie, and her four great-grandchildren, Alexis, Hunter, Emma and Lauren and all those who knew and loved her.
Special thanks to the Woods Park Retirement Home staff for their exceptional care and attention of Florence over the last 4 years.
Donations in Florence's name can be made to the Barriefoodbank.org. Due to the restrictions at the retirement home because of the pandemic, flowers cannot be received. Cards would be appreciated. Send to Art Stiff, 110 Lillian Cres., Suite 128, Barrie ON L4N 5H7
