It is with great sadness that we announce Emil Anton Novak (Mel to those who knew him) passed away on Sunday, January 15, 2017 at Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre at the age of 88. Mel was born in 1928 in Slovenia and came to Canada in 1935. The family lived in Kirkland Lake. Mel served in the Royal Canadian Navy on the first ever air craft carrier in Canada, the H.M.C.S. Magnificent where he served for 5 years. After he left the Navy he returned to Kirkland Lake and worked in the mines for a few years until he joined the O.P.P in 1955. After 30 years of service he retired in 1985. Mel loved Northern Ontario. He and Peg built a cottage just north of Kirkland Lake and enjoyed time there for 50 years. He also enjoyed nature, cooking, and a nice glass of wine. Mel is survived by his loving wife Peg of 60 years, one daughter Susan (Tony) of Winnipeg, 3 grandchildren and one great grand-daughter. He is also survived by his sister Mary, sister-in-law Doreen, and many nieces and nephews. He will always be remembered by many close and special friends.
