FIELDER, Steven Paul

On October 26, 2019, Steven died peacefully in the arms of his twin sister Susan at the Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre in Barrie. He is the beloved son of Shirley Fielder, brother to Randy Fielder, and brother-in-law of Susan’s husband, Garry Burke. Steve adored, and was very proud of his niece Lee Fielder, and nephew Dan Fielder (Monica). He was predeceased by his father Frank Fielder (2008).
After graduating from the University of Waterloo and the University of Western Ontario (London, ON), Steve studied music for three years at Durham University in England. He also took every opportunity he could to travel, visiting many countries around the world.
Steve believed very strongly in supporting and encouraging young musicians. He taught in London at both the Western Ontario Conservatory of Music and later at Conservatory Canada where he developed the theory program as well as co-authored the books Conservatory Canada: Theory for Students. Guests at the former Grosvenor Club enjoyed Steve’s dinner music for over 25 years, and he also taught piano privately before moving to Oro-Medonte.
Throughout his career Steve was actively involved in Kiwanis Music Festivals. He served as President of the Ontario Music Festivals Association for several years, and was on its Board of Directors for over 20 years. In 2010 he was the President of the Federation of Canadian Music Festivals Association. More recently he was the Executive Director of the Barrie Music Festival Association, and Past Lieutenant of Kiwanis International ─Division 8, (Eastern Canada and the Caribbean), as well as President of the Kiwanis Club of Kempenfelt Bay, and Director of Programming for the Ottawa Kiwanis Music Festival for five years before retiring in 2017.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Bonaire Golf Club, 1699 Woodrow Road, Coldwater ON, L0K 1E0, on Sat. November 9, 2019 from 1 to 4 pm, with Words of Remembrance at 2 pm.
The Steven P. Fielder Memorial Scholarship Fund has been established and will be presented to a deserving young musician who participates in each Provincial Music Festival across Canada in 2020. Donations to this award can be made by cheque, payable to OMFA (Ontario Music Festivals Association), at 17 Pinemore Cres., Toronto ON, M3A 1W5 or online at CanadaHelps, Tax receipts will be issued for donations of $25 or more.
