April 27, 1937 – February 6, 2024

Peacefully passed with family by his side at the I.O.O.F Seniors Home in Barrie on Tuesday, February 6th, 2024 at the age of 86 years. Beloved husband of Shirley (née Johnson) for 61 years. Loving father of Jocelyn (Paul). Proud and loving grandfather of Jasmine, Liam, Matthew and Ryan. Will be missed by his son Craig. Predeceased by his parents Fred and Evelyn and his sister Joyce.

Wayne graduated from the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg in 1962.  He was hired by the city of Winnipeg Planning Department and then moved to Ontario to assume the position of Superintendent of Planning with the North York Board of Education.  In the fall of 1978, Wayne commenced a career that spanned fifteen years as the President of Georgian College in Barrie where he had a tremendous impact, not only on the development and growth of the college, but also countless staff and students.

In retirement, Wayne and Shirley enjoyed spending winters in Florida in a home they built together.  They enjoyed a very active social life that involved numerous friends, many tennis teams, yoga, dancing and cruising to tropical destinations. Wayne and Shirley were also active members of Trinity Anglican church in Barrie, and enjoyed the fellowship of the Trinity family over the course of 45 years.

Wayne’s charm and caring nature touched many lives. He was a wonderful listener, conversationalist, story teller and motivator who could effortlessly make everyone he encountered feel heard and loved. Wayne maintained his interest in young people and often encouraged them to follow their dreams and reach for the stars.  He will be forever remembered as a humble, caring, witty and generous man who will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

Visitation will take place on Saturday, February 24th, 2024 at Steckley-Gooderham Funeral Home, 30 Worsley Street from 10 am until the time of Service in the Chapel at 11 am. Reception to immediately follow inside the Lower Lounge. In keeping with Wayne’s wishes cremation has taken place. In Wayne’s honour, random acts of kindness or a memorial donation to the charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.
