It is with deep sorrow and much love that we announce the passing of Roy Draper Burmister. Roy passed away peacefully on the morning of November 8th, 2022 at the Barrie Manor Enhanced Care Community where he resided for the past 2 years. He would have turned 86 on November 24th. He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 61 years, Patricia (Butters) Burmister, daughter Wendy Burmister Downey (Warren Cavanagh), son Roy Alan Burmister, granddaughter Beatrix Downey, niece Kristi Thompson, and nephew Peter Thompson. He is predeceased by his father Roy S. Burmister, mother Louise (Draper) Burmister, and son-in-law Ian Downey.
Roy was an athlete. He played Junior A hockey for the Guelph Biltmores under coach Eddie Bush in the early 1950s. He was an avid golfer well into his 70s and hosted and participated in many golf tournaments. He never met a sport he didn’t like.
Roy worked for Bell Canada for 34 years. He held many positions during his tenure, right until he retired in 1991 at the age of 54. He made lasting friendships there, and kept in contact with those friends for the rest of his life.
Fishing was a passion of Roy’s. During his free time he could be found at his cottage at Craigleith sitting on the deck, watching the birds. He always said that the sunsets at Craigleith were better than anywhere in the world.
Roy Burmister lived a long, full, life and he will be missed.
A celebration of Roy’s life will be held on Sunday, November 13th, 2022 from 2 PM – 3:30 PM at the Steckley-Gooderham Funeral Home, 30 Worsley St., Barrie, with words of remembrance at 2:30 PM.
In lieu of flowers donations to the Alzheimer Society of Canada would be appreciated.
