August 17, 1925 -- March 23, 2024

Doris Jean Binnie (née McQueen), age 98, of Barrie, Ontario, passed away peacefully on Saturday March 23rd,, 2024 at Amica Little Lake retirement home.

Born in Ingersoll, Ontario in 1925 to David and Nellie McQueen (née Thom), Doris was predeceased by her brothers Jack, Eldon, and Howard, as well as her sister June. Wife and business partner of Garfield Binnie, Doris was a loving mother to Helen then Brian before becoming a devoted grandmother to Helen’s boys Kevin (Ann Smith) and Darryl (Gisele Theriault) then Brian’s daughters Sabrina (Lance Thompkins), Sherry (Chris McCaskie) and Katy (Gerhard Buchner). For nearly twenty years, she has been a great-grandmother to eleven great-grandchildren.

To meet the vibrant Doris was to meet a dynamic woman with two obvious passions: her family and her cottage. Her cottage at Woodland Beach on Georgian Bay was her heart. A second home for Doris, her children and numerous grandchildren, “Nanny’s” cottage hosted decades of celebrations, swimming, walks, gorgeous sunsets, joyous meals and perhaps more ice cream than her dogs Suzie then Pepi should have had.

Accomplished in sewing and knitting, Doris regularly mended or made clothes for her adoring grandchildren. A busy cook and baker, she hosted countless family meals and holidays and prepared family food from garden to pickling jar to cookie tin. A long-time employee of Binnie’s Texaco and the Royal Victoria Hospital, Doris’s love of life was obvious to all who met her.

A celebration of Doris Binnie’s celebration of life will occur at the Steckley-Gooderham Funeral Home, 30 Worsley St., Barrie on 2 April 2024 from 2 to 4 p.m., with a sharing of memories to start at 2:30. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice Simcoe and are greatly appreciated by the family.
