Captain, P.P.C.L.I. (Ret’d)

Swiftly in hospital, on Thursday, December 28, 2017, in his 95th year. Doris, his beloved wife of 63 years, predeceased him in 2011. Now they are together again.

Loving father of Lorie (Sharon), Joy (Terry), Neil (Janet) and Lynn. Cherished grandfather of Lara (Holt), Peter (Lynda), Kevin (Chantal) and Matt, Scott (Shannon) and Craig, and Chris and Carly. Delighted great-grandfather of Holland, Ethan, Landon, Aubrey, Olivia, Ava and Carter.

Dear brother-in-law of Verna of Winnipeg and Glen (Brenda) of Calgary. Survived by many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by several brothers and sisters.

A proud member of the P.P.C.L.I. throughout his distinguished career with the Canadian Armed Forces, from serving in the Korean War and including a posting in 1976 with the UN Peace mission in the Golan Heights of Syria.

A wonderful family man and friend of many, with a ready smile and cheerful nature, Doug enjoyed golfing and curling in his younger years and loved playing cards with friends and family. He felt blessed in life and generously shared his time and energy by volunteering at the Terraces residence and with Painswick United Church in his later years.

A Celebration of Life for Doug will be held on Friday, January 5, 2018 at Steckley-Gooderham Funeral Home at 201 Minet’s Point Road, Barrie. Friends may pay respects from 10:00-11:00 a.m. with the service at 11:00 a.m., followed by a reception. For those who wish, in lieu of flowers, donations to the Royal Victoria Hospital (RVH) or the OSPCA would be greatly appreciated by the family.
