COLUMN: Dust off the barbecue, prepare for garage sales, it's almost spring!

Spring is definitely in the air as thoughts turn to backyard barbecues, walks without a jacket, garage sales, excursions and much more

When is winter over for you?

I’m not sure how many more snowfalls we may face, but we’ve got to be getting to the final three or four “last” of the winter weather events this season, no?

Spring officially arrives March 20, but we could still have some of the white stuff on the ground by then.

So when does it feel like spring to you?

Anyone in Canada knows that breeze that gives us a signal. It's hard to explain, but when it hits, it smells different, it feels different. It has a touch of warmth trying to break through the coolness and instantly you know spring weather is not far off now.

My playlist is different in the spring. By different playlist, I mean a completely different order of listening to the Tragically Hip with a lot more Road Apples tunes.

But there is a spring (no pun intended…or was there?) in everything we do. The tunes get faster, the food we eat gets lighter, more veggies and fruit, less soups and breads.

Walks without a jacket, but your best heavy sweater and a T-shirt underneath with the hope you’ll need to un-layer. It's not quite sandal weather, but you’re definitely pulling them out of the back of the closet.

The fun and overwhelming words of ‘garage sale’ start popping up in everyday conversation around your house; at least they do at mine.

This will be the year we get rid of everything in the garage, I just know it.

For me and my wife, it's a nearly every weekend trip to Muskoka to buy, well, anything.

We mainly go to walk the main street in Bracebridge and the wharf in Gravenhurst, but really just to get out and see the most gorgeous part of the province, in our opinion.

We haven’t been able to attend the Spring Cottage Life Show in three years, but we’ll be there April 9. That event truly kicks off our passion for the spring weather and the ideas for what can be a fun year.

There are also three more things that become a near every day event: Barbecue, BBQ and grilling.

The menu is already being put together for many nights of outdoor grilling.

Our three-year-old daughter is happy to see the rooftops without snow because it means “summer is coming,” and she will be able to run through the sprinkler.

That kind of warmth is still a ways off kiddo, but I like the way you think.

I know that before we get to the beautiful sunny weather we have to endure the dirty snow and garbage that lies underneath it, but once that's gone, we’re there.

Let's get going with outdoor festivals, spring park visits and sitting on the deck with a good book.
