After what one organizer says was "several years of trying to convince the City of Barrie that women need their own shinny time," it has finally happened.

Monday was the first skate at the East Bayfield Community Centre arena for women's shinny.

A handful of the 1991 "original six" Barrie Women's Hockey Association members were on hand for the event.

"Thirty-two years later, after raising families, having careers and life in general, these women are still playing hockey. Why? Because they love the game. Great day!" wrote Susan MacIntyre, an original six member.

The north-end community centre is located at 80 Livingstone St. E., near Bayfield Street.
