St. Peter's swim team dives into medal haul at GBs

Jordi Vilchez, Lucian Vilchez, Scotty Sutton, Noah Shivers, Noemi Blake, and Daniel Caraballo all heading to OFSAA swim meet in February

The St. Peter's Catholic Secondary School swim team is creating quite a buzz in the region as they get ready for the Ontario championships in 2023.

The Georgian Bay Secondary School Association (GBSSA) swimming championships were held at East Bayfield Community Centre on Thursday and the St. Peter's Panthers took home a number of accolades.

The south-end Barrie high school's swim team are the 2022 open boys division champions, the 2022 senior boys team runner-up, and six swimmers from the Ashford Drive school qualified for OFSAA, which will be held Feb. 28 to March 1, 2023 at the Windsor International Aquatic Centre. 

The six students who qualified for OFSAA are: 

* Jordi Vilchez — four golds: men's open 200-metre freestyle, 100-metre individual medley (IM), 4x50-metre medley relay

* Lucian Vilchez — four golds: men's open 200-metre IM, 100-metre backstroke, 4x50-metre medley relay, 4x100-metre freestyle relay

* Scotty Sutton — three golds: men's open 4x100-metre freestyle relay, 4x50-metre medley relay, 100-metre butterfly, as well as bronze in the 200-metre freestyle

* Noah Shivers — gold in the senior boys 100-metre backstroke, silver in the senior boys 4x50-metre freestyle relay, bronze in the senior boys 100-metre IM, and bronze in the senior boys 4x500-metre medley relay

* Noemi Blake — gold in the open women's 100-metre freestyle, silver in the open women's 100-metre IM

* Daniel Caraballo — gold in the open men's 4x100-metre freestyle relay and in the open men's 4x50-metre medley relay

Other medallists from the Barrie school included Danvier Powell, Joe Raco, Nick Raco, and Gavin Marshal.

Now in its seventh year in existence, this is the Panthers' first time winning a GBSSA division title.
