Massie mines gold at world championships, now sets sights on Beijing

Barrie native, 26, won gold in the snowboard-cross event on Saturday at World Para Snow Sports Championship in Lillehammer

Barrie native Alex Massie had added Paralympic gold to his trophy case after finishing atop the podium in Norway on the weekend.

The 26-year-old grabbed a gold in the snowboard-cross event on Saturday at the World Para Snow Sports Championship in Lillehammer.

Massie may have called his success when he told BarrieToday last week prior to the race that he “would label myself as a boarder-cross specialist and say it's my preferred event, so I’m looking forward to this week.”

The Barrie native had earned a silver medal on Jan. 14 in the snowboarding event, weeks after an accident at home where he impaled his armpit on a fence.

In a previous interview with BarrieToday, Massie said that while he was supposed to leave for Norway on Jan. 2, the injury needed to heal to the point where the stitches wouldn't fall out prematurely.

“The last stitch fell out the night before the race, so I was good to go,” Massie said at the time.

Massie will now get ready for what he hopes is a spot in the upcoming Beijing Paralympic Games, which run March 4-13.

When BarrieToday spoke with Massie on Jan. 19, he said he was sure he was going, but was awaiting official word.

“I’m not 100 per cent sure what is happening, but I am pretty sure I’ll be there,” Massie said. “My mom and girlfriend came to Norway because they won’t be in Beijing for that. I really hope to be able to win big there.”
