The Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) announced its men’s rugby award winners for the 2021 season on Wednesday, which included several student-athletes from the Georgian Grizzlies.

The awards were highlighted by third-year Grizzlies second-row Jed Bricknell, who was named as the co-winner of the OCAA’s men’s rugby player of the year award.

The native of Alliston was instrumental in helping lead the Grizzlies to their ninth consecutive winning season with a 2-1-1 record.

Bricknell led Georgian in tackles along with steals while also being versatile by playing multiple positions. His leadership was on display all season as he worked with rookie players and made all players around him better.

Bricknell shares the award with Travis Zelinski from St. Lawrence College.

James Robb-Kennedy made an immediate impact with the Grizzlies this season and was named the OCAA’s men’s rugby rookie of the year. The Barrie native scored one try for the Grizzlies in four regular season games.

A total of four Grizzlies players were named OCAA all-stars with Bricknell, Robb-Kennedy, Daniel Martyn (Barrie) and Donovan Jacko (Brampton) each receiving the honour.

For Jacko, it is his third straight season earning an OCAA all-star award.

The Grizzlies will travel to face the St. Lawrence Surge in the OCAA men’s rugby gold medal game this coming Saturday, Nov. 13 in Kingston on the St. Lawrence College campus North Field at 1 P.M.
