Barrie Colts forward Jaiden Newton has been named the OHL's academic player of the month for the Central Division in January.

A rookie forward with the Barrie Colts has been named one of the Ontario Hockey League’s (OHL) Academic Players of the Month for January.

Jaiden Newton, 16, has received the honour for the Central Division this month.

Newton currently holds an A average in two Grade 11 courses — 85 per cent in transportation technology and 82 per cent in high-performance athlete co-op — as well as a 78 per cent average in Grade 12 business leadership at Innisdale Secondary School.

“J.D.’s teachers have remarked that he is a hard-working student who attends his classes regularly and always submits his work on time,” Colts academic adviser Chris Cudmore said in a news release.

Newton has played 26 games this season, notching one goal and four assists for the Colts.

The club selected the five-foot-11, 167-pound athlete 26th overall in the second round in the 2023 OHL Priority Selection from the Whitby Wildcats U16 program.
