Sunny days: Barrie Colts goalie named OHL goalie of the week

Barrie Colts goalie Sam Hillebrandt has been named OHL goalie of the week.

Barrie Colts netminder Sam Hillebrandt's gleaming goals-against average and save percentage, not to mention a pair of wins, have earned him Ontario Hockey League goalie-of-the-week honours. 

The 18-year-old Floridian, who hails from Riverview in the Tampa Bay area but grew up in Michigan, had a 1.00 GAA and .971 SV% this past weekend as the Colts defeated the Mississauga Steelheads, 6-1, on Friday night, and followed that up with a 5-1 victory over the Brantford Bulldogs on Saturday night. 

Stopping a total of 67 shots last week, the six-foot-one netminder turned aside 34 of the 35 attempts that came his way on Friday against the first-place Steelheads, and the stopped 33 of the 34 shots he faced versus Brantford. 

The Colts also dropped a 4-2 decision to the Erie Otters on Thursday night with Ben West between the pipes. 

Barrie sits at 6-6-0 on the season, with Hillebrandt owning a season mark of 4-2-0, posting a 2.20 goals-against average and .926 save percentage.

Hillebrandt played in the Detroit Little Caesars AAA program before moving to Florida. The Colts signed him as a free agent ahead of the 2022 season after spending the 2021-22 season with the Florida Alliance North 16U organization.

Also in the running for this week's were Carter George of the Owen Sound Attack and Brayden Gillespie of the Guelph Storm.

Meanwhile, Vancouver Canucks prospect Kirill Kudryavtsev was named OHL player of the week after the defenceman scored two goals and adding four assists in three games.
