Christian Young struck out a season-high 16 batters to lead the Welland Jackfish to a 7-1 win in Barrie Saturday night at Coates Stadium in Midhurst.

The six-foot-five right-hander from Hamburg, N.Y., was making his third start of the 2021 campaign and had fanned 14 in his previous 11.1 innings before shutting down the Baycats over seven innings.

Young (1-1) allowed a run on three hits with four walks.

Offensively, Dane Tofteland went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run, Griffin Keller and Dennis Dei Baning each had two hits and an RBI, Eric Marriott, Brendon Dadson and Cole Warken all drove in a run, while Matt Hilderbrandt and Nolan Pettipiece added two hits apiece.

Baycats starter Brad Grieveson (1-2) allowed six runs on 13 hits over 7.2 innings. He walked one and struck out five.

Ryan Rijo drove in Barrie's lone run with an RBI single in the third inning that scored Jake Wilson.

Welland improved to 5-7, and Barrie dropped to 4-7.
