Batter up! Baycats release full schedule for upcoming season

The Intercounty Baseball League (IBL) has released its full schedule for the upcoming season. 

The Barrie Baycats will play 21 home games and 21 road games, with the team's regular season concluding Sunday, Aug. 20.

The Baycats will play their home-opener on Thursday, May 18 against the Toronto Maple Leafs at Vintage Throne Stadium in Midhurst.

The Baycats have also made several announcements recently.

Local native Ryan Rijo has re-signed for the 2023 season. With a lifetime IBL batting average of .363, Rijo will be entering his sixth season with the team.

The Baycats has also inked starting pitcher Jeifry Nunez for the 2023 season. The 24-year-old native of the Dominican Republic had a 2-0 record with a 3.13 earned-run average (ERA) in five regular-season starts last year. In 23 innings pitched, he struck out 25 hitters and walked six.

Nunez, who joins the Baycats after spending the 2022 season with the Guelph Royals, was in the Texas Rangers organization from 2015 to 2019, pitching to a 3.06 ERA with low-A baseball in Spokane, Wash., in 2019. 

The Baycats finished in fifth place last season with a 14-16 record and lost to the Toronto Maple Leafs in the IBL semifinals.

The franchise, which was established in 2001, won league championships in six straight seasons, from 2014 to 2019, as well as its first IBL title in 2005.
