The OMHA championship belongs to the Barrie Jr. Colts in 2023-24.

Barrie defeated last year’s U16 AAA champion, the Peterborough Minor Petes, by a score of 5-2 in Sunday’s championship final in Brampton.

James Elliott and Troy Patton both scored twice in the championship victory while Alex MacLean had a goal and two helpers. MacLean led the championship tournament in scoring with eight points (1-7-8) in three games.

Barrie went 3-0 in Brampton to capture U16 AAA supremacy, this after spending most of the season in the No. 2 slot on the weekly OHL Cup top 10 rankings.

The Jr. Colts went wire to wire in first place in the OMHA East standings, finishing up the season at 33-2-0. Finalist Peterborough joins Barrie at the OHL Cup following a 20-13-1-1 regular season for fifth place in the standings.

The Oakville Rangers and Oshawa Minor Generals also emerge from the eight-team OMHA championships to clinch OHL Cup berths. Oakville lost 5-0 to Barrie in Sunday morning’s semifinal game while Oshawa dropped a 5-3 decision against Peterborough, also finishing in the top four.

The Niagara North Stars placed fifth over the weekend, skating to a key 3-2 win over the York-Simcoe Express to round out preliminary play. They secure an OHL Cup wild card play-in spot, hitting the ice on Monday, March 25 as they look to secure a spot in the showcase.
