New Fitness for Breath program offers support for people with chronic lung disease

The Ontario Lung Association (OLA) and the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka are excited to announce the launch of Fitness for Breath, an innovative exercise maintenance program for people with chronic lung disease.

The launch will be celebrated at an event at the Barrie YMCA on Friday, October 23, starting at 10:30 a.m.

The Mayor of Barrie, Jeff Lehman, MPP Ann Hoggarth, Ontario Lung Association and YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka staff and program participants will be in attendance to talk about the new program.

Supported by a grant from the Ontario Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport, the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka initiative is one of many Fitness for Breath programs that will be established in communities across the province over the next two years.

The goals of Fitness for Breath are to:

  • Encourage inactive seniors and older adults to become active for life;
  • Improve participants' activity and daily function;
  • Provide an accessible and safe exercise environment; and
  • Strengthen the community recreation sector.

Fitness for Breath introduces basic movement skills to adults with chronic lung disease.

Participants learn the importance of staying active for life and the health benefits of exercise.

YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka staff have been trained to provide the specialized exercise maintenance program to people living with chronic lung disease.

Fitness for Breath classes are currently being held at the Barrie and Innisfil YMCA.
