Construction of Bryne Drive South, between Harvie Road and Caplan Avenue in south-end Barrie, is expected to begin this spring and be complete in the fall of 2024.

In addition to construction of the unopened portion of Bryne Drive South, the project will eventually include construction of the unopened portion of Bryne Drive North between Harvie Road and Essa Road.

It’s all part of the Harvie Road-Big Bay Point Road-Highway 400 crossing designed to improve traffic flow across the south end of Barrie.

The Bryne Drive South project includes construction of a new five-lane roadway, complete with off-road bike lanes and sidewalks.

There will also be construction of a new sanitary sewer and new watermains, along with new stormwater management ponds.

The city’s design team is expected to release the tender package in early 2023 for Bryne Drive South.

Bryne Drive North is expected to be constructed in 2025-26.

The Harvie Road-Big Bay Point Road-Highway 400 bridge was completed in early summer 2021. It connects Harvie Road to Big Bay Point Road across the 400. The bridge has five lanes for vehicle traffic, two separate lanes for bicycles and two sidewalks for pedestrians.

The $76-million bridge can handle 20,000 vehicles a day and is designed to significantly reduce traffic volumes on Essa Road, Mapleview Drive and other streets in the area.
