Wintry blast leads to multiple collisions on Barrie roads

Barrie Police received about 30 calls for collisions on Wednesday, prompting police to remind motorists to slow down and heed conditions

Wednesday’s winter blast created some problems on local roads, prompting city police to remind people to drive according to the weather and make sure your vehicle is ready for it.

Barrie police communications co ordinator Jennett Mays told BarrieToday there were multiple collisions, though she wasn’t aware that any were serious.

“We received about 30 calls for motor vehicle collisions throughout the day on Wednesday,” said Mays. “However, some were referred directly to the Collision Reporting Centre, and some were duplicate reports with multiple people called in the same collision, and there may have been additional ones that may have gone right to the Collision Reporting Centre without appearing on our list.”

Mays said with the flurries experienced in the area on Wednesday it did impact road conditions. Barrie police encourage people to prepare for their trips by ensuring their vehicles are cleared of snow and they have plenty of windshield washer fluid.

“When you’re on the road, drive according to the conditions, slow down and increase the distance between your vehicle and others around you,” said Mays. “If you are involved in a motor vehicle collision, the BPS Traffic Services Unit reminds motorists to call 911 if anyone is injured,”

Mays noted if there are no injuries and the estimated combined damage to the involved vehicles is less than $2,000, the collision can be reported through the Collision Reporting Centre located at the Barrie Simcoe Emergency Services Campus at 110 Fairview Rd.
