Barry Ward, right, watches as the election results start to come in at City Hall on Monday, October 22, 2018. Kevin Lamb for BarrieToday.

Veteran councillor Barry Ward is back for another twirl at Barrie City Hall after winning in Ward 4 on Monday night.

Ward had 1,477 votes, followed in second by Bryan Harris with 1,010 and Dan Boucher in third with 446.

“I’m very pleased, obviously,” Ward told BarrieToday on Monday night. “It’s a great honour and kind of humbling to have won my sixth term, hard to believe.”

Ward, who was first elected to city council in 2000, said his priorities include more infrastructure work.

“We have some big projects on the go, such as the Fisher Auditorium downtown, the market and the new transit terminal, so we’ve got to be able to make sure we can afford them all,” he said.

Despite the victory, the voter turnout wasn’t great, which Ward says is unfortunate.

“It was another disappointing turnout, but in Barrie we’ve become used to that,” he said.

Looking forward, traffic is a main issue across the ever-growing city.

“Another is downtown, but I’m not sure whether it’s perception or it’s reality,” Ward said. “There is definitely a lot of people out there who are concerned about the downtown, so it’s something that has to be addressed.”

The new term of council will be sworn in Dec. 1.
