A local family is devastated after a young woman and her boyfriend were struck and killed by a vehicle on Mill Street in Angus.
Savannah Simon, 30, and her boyfriend Jo Williams, 34, were killed in the 5:45 p.m. incident Saturday night.
The investigation is ongoing and no charges have been laid at this time. The OPP have not officially released the names of the victims.
However, Savannah's step-mother, Carla Sturge, said she dropped her step-daughter, Savannah Simon, and Simon's boyfriend, Jo Williams, at the Borden Inn for a night out to celebrate Simon’s recent birthday.
Sturge said she doesn’t know any details about what happened, but is hoping to hear more soon from the OPP.
In the meantime, she is trying to hold it together for Simon’s three children, aged 3, 9 and 11.
“Savannah just turned 30 on Thursday. They were going (out) to celebrate,” said Sturge, between tears. “I don’t know how to tell her kids. It's horrible."
"We don’t know anything, but we’re trying to hold it all together. Savannah and the kids have been living with us (in Barrie) for about a year and we were watching (the kids) last night," said Sturge.
“Her dad is at the motel now to get all of her things. I just couldn’t see them right now. He is being strong and holding everyone else up right now, but he is taking it hard, I know that.”
Mill Street was closed last night between River Drive and Cecil Street for approximately four hours. Sturge said while she isn’t sure how the collision happened, she doesn’t know how two people could be missed while crossing a main road before 6 p.m.
“There were two of them, it's the main road and it is well-lit,” said Sturge. “It just doesn’t make sense.”
Nottawasaga OPP Constable Chad Wilson told BarrieToday that he was waiting on a more detailed report from investigators on what exactly happened.
“It is rare for two pedestrians to be hit, but in this case I do know that they were not at a crosswalk,” said Wilson. “I do not know if that played a part, but it is a very wide road.”
No other details were provided by the OPP as of 12:15 p.m.
