NEWS RELEASE
WOMEN AND CHILDREN'S SHELTER OF BARRIE
*************************
Dec. 6 is the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women in Canada.

Established in 1991 by the Parliament of Canada, this day marks the anniversary of the murders in 1989 of 14 young women at l'École Polytechnique de Montréal, who were killed because they were women.

Unfortunately 30 years later, the effects of this tragedy are still felt, and gender based violence continues to be an issue.

At 4:30 p.m., we will be raising a flag to half-mast at Barrie City Hall to mark the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.

Following the flag raising, the In Focus: Shelter Me documentary will be playing in the City Hall Rotunda for the public to view. Opening remarks and presentation portion of the evening will commence from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

As we commemorate the 14 young women whose lives were taken in 1989, guests will also have the opportunity to reflect on the women who have been murdered in 2019, all due to gender-based violence. Participants will be encouraged to identify their call to action.

What can we do as a community to end violence against women and stop the murders of women and young girls?

We hope you will join us in being a partner for change. Following the service we welcome the community to join us for light refreshments.
