Spring showers bring May flowers at Innisfil plant sale (6 photos)

Rain didn't stop shoppers at the Innisfil Garden Club's annual fundraising sale

It takes more than rain to stop a gardener.

Members of the Innisfil Garden Club were out in full force on Saturday, May 25, at the South Innisfil Arboretum, setting up their annual Plant Sale, Bake Sale, Tailgate Sale and Barbecue – in the pouring rain.

Tables were covered with pots of plants culled from members’ gardens, while houseplants and cacti sheltered underneath.

A tent housed the cash box, and provided temporary cover for those who forgot their umbrellas or slickers.

Baking was kept dry inside a small gazebo near the entrance to the tree park, located at the corner of 20 Sideroad and Shoreacres Drive in Gilford.

And if only a few vendors braved the weather to participate in the tailgate sale, at least there was no shortage of shoppers, looking for plants and advice for the garden, or fabulous home-baked scones, pecan butter tarts, rhubarb crisp, and blueberry pie.

The annual event is a fundraiser for the garden club, which holds its monthly meetings at the Churchill Community Centre.

The next meeting of the Innisfil Garden Club will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, June 10, when Julia Dimakos – The Gardening Girl blogger and photographer – will speak on the topic: After the Harvest – What’s Next?

There will also be a members-only Flower Show, offering opportunities to win this year’s trophies for Best Iris and Best Peony.
