Skating pond and fireplace open at Heritage Park

Skaters love 'country cottage skating pond' on Kempenfelt Bay

Heritage Place has been turned into something out of a Canadiana screensaver as the water in front of the gazebo has been converted to a skating pond equipped with its own fireplace.

Opening last weekend was the Heritage Park skating pond, open any day of the week with weather permitting.

Downtown BIA managing director Craig Stevens says this is a great new meeting place for city residents.

“This is fantastic, to essentially have a 'country cottage skating pond' in an urban downtown setting right beside our frozen Kempenfelt Bay and within the downtown so that you can grab a hot chocolate or coffee and enjoy some family and friends time is absolutely awesome,” said Stevens.

The skating pond is open for skating anytime during the day and week, but the fire is stoked for warming on Saturdays.

Stephanie Banting had her kids out this past Saturday to enjoy the sunshine on the new skate pond.

Banting says she brought her children out to enjoy an activity she enjoyed as a kid.

“We love it. This is the way we should be skating,” said Banting. “It is the way I grew up skating and to be able to enjoy not just the fresh air but the fantastic scenery.

"It is perfect.”
