An awards ceremony was held earlier this week in Barrie to honour outstanding individuals who have volunteered their time to local organizations in the community for a significant length of time.

Among the recipients were six long-time board members of Barrie and District Christmas Cheer who were each presented the Ontario Volunteer Service Award for their continuous service with the charity that donates food and toy hampers to over 1,700 local families in need.

“We cannot do what we do without the members of our board, and specifically those who have been so dedicated for so long,”  said Leah Wells, Barrie and District Christmas Cheer President.

The Ontario Volunteer Service Awards recognize adults by the length of time they volunteer with one organization. That time can range from five years all the way to 65.

With over 111 years of combined volunteer service, these six individuals honoured on Nov. 26, 2019 have demonstrated their commitment to helping the community at Christmas time and continue to play a key role in the success of the Christmas Cheer program.
