MIDHURST – The County of Simcoe is celebrating Earth Day on April 22 in support of healthy, sustainable communities. This year, the county has proclaimed Earth Day to help inspire a greater appreciation of the natural world through conservation and protection.

“The County of Simcoe is joining a growing number of municipalities across North America that are supporting Earth Day and taking concrete action to address climate change at a local level,” said Warden George Cornell. “The county is committed to reducing our impact on the environment, and we are working with residents and businesses to have an even greater impact across our region.”

The County of Simcoe is committed to sustainability in its mission and vision to be environmental stewards and responsible guardians for a sustainable future. Together, County of Simcoe departments work to promote sustainable decision-making and continually incorporate sustainable practices to help maintain our region's beautiful habitat for future generations.

The county’s dedicated Sustainable Operations Team works with staff, partners and vendors to integrate and inspire a sustainable, resource-efficient and cost-effective approach into the county's operations.

In 2022, the county is celebrating its 100th anniversary as a nationally recognized leader in forest management. The Simcoe County Forest has received the national honour of being recognized as the Forest Capital of Canada for 2022 by the Canadian Institute of Forestry (CIF). A century of growth and investment in 33,000 acres of Simcoe County Forest has resulted in tremendous benefits to the overall health of the environment, with an estimated ecological value exceeding $34 million annually.

The County of Simcoe is leading the way in its solid waste diversion efforts, ranking second of 98 municipalities. The county continues to provide education on our diversion programs and promote the importance of separating materials to protect the environment and conserve its landfills.

This year, the county is hosting an event through our Simcoe County Museum on Saturday, April 23, which shares information on hands-on recycling, up-cycling, and nature activities. Admission to the museum is by donation, and no pre-registration is required. Find out more here.
